A story to me means a plot where there is some surprise. Because that is how life is—full of surprises.
Travel Tip
In 1986, Susan and I went on our first gal-pal trip together—to Japan and Hong Kong. It was there that I bought the first turtle for my collection. In Asia, turtles represent longevity and good luck, but there was another reason these creatures appealed to me. I chose the turtle as a symbol of taking informed risks because anatomically, the turtle cannot move forward without sticking its head out from under its shell. When I returned home, Turtle Awards became a hallmark of my management style. I initiated these awards in an effort to encourage innovation and creativity among members of my group. If someone brought an interesting new idea to the table and pulled the resources together to accomplish it, he or she would receive a turtle—a carved stone turtle or a plush toy, whatever. Whether it ended up succeeding or failing, the act of courage was rewarded. Life is risk. When there’s no risk—there’s no life. Be the Turtle.
